The Indian Railways is set to enhance connectivity in Jammu and Kashmir with the introduction of the Vande Bharat Express train between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) and Srinagar. A trial run for this semi-high-speed train is expected to commence shortly, marking a major milestone in regional travel and boosting tourism.
Boost to Connectivity and Tourism
Currently, Vande Bharat Express operates 136 services nationwide, and the Jammu-Srinagar route will add to its network. This train is expected to improve travel convenience, attract more tourists to the Kashmir Valley, and contribute significantly to the region’s economic development.
Trial Run Details
Before the official launch, Indian Railways will conduct a trial run between Katra and Srinagar. A senior railway official told ET Now that this step is essential to ensure the train’s safety and performance on the challenging terrain of the region. The Northern Railway’s Jammu Division will oversee the train’s operations and maintenance.
Proposed Stoppages
Once operational, the train is expected to stop at major stations, including:
•Reasi
•Sangaldan
•Banihal
•Qazigund
•Anantnag
•Avantipora
Final stoppages will be determined by the Railway Board.
Speed and Travel Time
The Vande Bharat Express, manufactured by the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, is designed to run at a maximum speed of 160 kmph. The newly constructed broad gauge (BG) line between Katra and Reasi, recently authorized for use, will enable the train to cover the 190 km route in just 3 hours.
Proposed Schedule:
•Katra to Srinagar: Departs at 08:10 hrs, arrives at 11:20 hrs.
•Srinagar to Katra: Departs at 12:45 hrs, arrives at 15:55 hrs.
