Megha Engineering and Infrastructures Ltd. (MEIL) has successfully completed the excavation of 10.4 kilometers of the Zojila Tunnel, a vital infrastructure project spanning a total length of 13 kilometers.
Situated on the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, the Zojila Tunnel is poised to become one of the longest and most strategically significant tunnels in the region. Officials described this achievement as a major milestone toward the tunnel’s completion, highlighting the challenges posed by the rugged mountainous terrain.
“MEIL’s success in overcoming the challenging terrain is a significant achievement,” officials said.
A senior official from MEIL added, “We are proud to have reached this important milestone. The Zojila Tunnel project will not only enhance connectivity but also contribute to the development and security of the region.”
The tunnel is being constructed using the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Once completed, it will provide all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Ladakh, drastically reducing travel time over the Zojila Pass from 3.5 hours to just 45 minutes.
This enhanced connectivity is expected to play a pivotal role in the financial and cultural development of the Srinagar and Ladakh regions.
