A concerning report has revealed that more than 88% of pre-primary teachers in both government and private schools across Jammu and Kashmir lack professional qualifications.

According to recent official figures, only 11.8% of teachers at the pre-primary level are professionally trained. Among them, 9.1% are male, while 13.2% are female tutors.

At higher levels of education, the percentage of trained teachers improves:

  • Primary Level: 68.6% professionally qualified (76.4% male, 61.9% female)
  • Upper-Primary Level: 72.5% professionally qualified (77.3% male, 66.9% female)
  • Secondary Level: 87.5% professionally qualified (87.2% male, 87.9% female)
  • Senior Secondary Level: 87.2% professionally qualified (86.6% male, 88.1% female)

Jammu and Kashmir ranks second-highest in India for untrained teachers at the pre-primary and upper-primary levels, while it ranks fourth in terms of untrained teachers at the primary level. Tamil Nadu tops the list, followed by J&K, where only 22.3% of pre-primary teachers have received proper training.

Digital Library Deficiency

The report also highlights a severe shortage of digital learning resources in Jammu and Kashmir. Among 24,296 government and private schools, only 373 schools (1.53%) have digital libraries.

In terms of student enrollment:

  • 5,452 private schools accommodate over 12 lakh students
  • 18,785 government schools serve over 14 lakh students

The findings have raised concerns about the quality of education in the region, emphasizing the urgent need for teacher training programs and improved digital infrastructure in schools.
